A Daily Gospel Reflection by Dn. Mike Hidalgo for April 26th, 2024

The Holy Gospel According to John (14:1-6)

Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled.  You have faith in God; have faith also in me.  In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places.  If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be.

Where I am going you know the way.”  Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?”
Jesus said to him,
“I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Reflection:  When I first started to drive, many years ago, I had a Thomas Guide map book in my car.  If I was going to a place that I had not been to before, I had to break out the Thomas Guide and look up the location.  I would then plan my route.  How about  going to the Auto Club to get a route map where they would highlight the route for you to drive to get you to where you were going.  These things are now things of the past because now almost everyone who has a smart phone has a GPS app.  Now we use the GPS to give us directions to where we want to go. The GPS will redirect us if we happen to make a wrong turn.  With GPS readily available, it is almost impossible to get lost today.

I like to refer to today’s Gospel as our spiritual GPS.  We are loves sinners, and sometimes the road we are on is not leading to the place Jesus has prepared for us.  We make wrong turns, take detours, and we get lost every once in a while.  We even tend to give up in finding the right place.  Thank God allows us to make U-turns, and get back on the right path that will lead us to Him.  This is possible because of our spiritual GPS, Jesus, our Lord and Savior, who tells us, “I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.”

Jesus is the way.  Wherever he goes, we follow. Jesus is the truth.  He will never lie or deceive us.  Jesus is the life.  He is the spring of living water and the living bread that comes down from heaven and gives us eternal life.  Jesus is willing to guide us at any time.  We just need to have faith in Him and we’ve got nothing to worry.  He will bring us in the right place.  We will have inner peace and our hearts will not be troubled when we follow Jesus, our spiritual GPS.  With Jesus, everything is possible.

Action for the Day:  We are loved sinners, who get lost sometimes.  It is sin that leads us astray, get lost and follow the wrong path.  All we need to do, is turn to our spiritual GPS, Jesus, and ask for his love, mercy and forgiveness.  We do this in the sacrament of reconciliation.  If we are lost, pray for the grace to seek this sacrament get us back on the right path that will lead us to follow Jesus.
