The Gospel according to Matthew (11:25-27)
At that time Jesus exclaimed:
“I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
for although you have hidden these things
from the wise and the learned
you have revealed them to the childlike.
Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.
All things have been handed over to me by my Father.
No one knows the Son except the Father,
and no one knows the Father except the Son
and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.”
REFLECTION: In today’s Gospel passage, in which Jesus praises The Father, Jesus also explains His relationship with Him; and He adds, that only those who are childlike can encounter God; meaning, that only those, who totally trust and depend on Him, like a child trusts and depends on their mother and father, our Heavenly Father will reveal Himself to them.
In our faith journey, and walk with God, it’s important to keep in mind, that He is the one who selects those to whom He will reveal His profound mystery. It is not up to us. Often, I have, and maybe you too, witness moments in which discussions have occurred between believers and non-believers, on God’s existence and the Gospel of Christ. However, Scripture advises us against clashing and engaging in these types of situations, for those who say that they followers of Jesus Christ.
Just this past Sunday, in the Gospel of Mark, Jesus sends His disciples two by two, and as He instructed His disciples then, He instructs us today, to simply move on if the message is not well received.
Today’s passage should serve as a powerful reminder, that our own faith is a divine gift, granted by God, who reveals to us according to His will. Jesus Himself affirmed, “It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you”. Today’s passage may also remind us of the reading from, 1 John 4:14-15: “We have seen for ourselves, and can testify, that the Father has sent the Son as savior of the world. When anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwells in him and he in God.”
ACTION FOR THE DAY: I invite you today; to take time and reflect on the way(s) you look for each day, to have a deep and personal relationship with God. As you do this, pray to Jesus Christ, to help you to seek Him, with a most sincere and humble heart.
