A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke 11:29-32

While still more people gathered in the crowd, Jesus said to them, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah. Just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. At the judgment, the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here.

At the judgment, the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Encountering Christ

Jesus challenges us to see beyond the miraculous and recognize that the greatest sign of all is His very presence. While the crowds of His time sought dramatic wonders, they failed to see that the ultimate miracle, God in the flesh, was among them.

How often in our own lives do we seek out signs—concrete, extraordinary proofs of God’s presence? It’s so easy to miss the divine working quietly in the everyday moments. Let me share a story from my own life that highlights this.

Several years ago, before I was ordained a deacon, I would bring Holy Communion to our homebound parishioners. One woman, Shirley, was particularly lonely, she never left her home, rarely had visitors and felt forgotten. When I brought her Holy Communion and spent time listening to her, she confided in me that she had been asking God for a sign of His presence. Through our visits and prayers, she later told me she had found the sign she needed—not in a miracle, but in the simple presence of another person who cared. She no longer felt abandoned; instead, she felt surrounded by God’s love.

Jesus reminds us that He is the greatest sign we need. Like the Ninevites who repented when Jonah preached to them, we are called to open our hearts to His message of love, that He knows us deeply and that we matter to Him. The Queen of Sheba journeyed from a great distance to hear Solomon’s wisdom, yet Jesus, far greater than Solomon, is already here, inviting us into a relationship with Him.

Let’s not be like those crowds who missed seeing the Messiah in their midst because they were looking for the wrong signs. Instead, let’s recognize Jesus in the everyday acts of love and kindness around us. Whether in our families, at work, or within our communities, we can be channels of His love and mercy.

Action of the Day

Pray every day, don’t just say your prayers, pray from your heart. Make time each day to pray, asking God to reveal His presence in your life.

Be a gift of kindness. Find small ways to show love to those around you.

Learn God’s language – how He speaks to us. Spend time in God’s Word, allowing it to penetrate and shape your heart.

Be present. Reach out to one person who may feel isolated, offer your friendship and support. Walk with them on their journey, be intentional and listen.

As we go through our days, remember that Jesus is always with us, calling us to be His signs of love and grace in the world. May your heart be open to His presence in every moment.
