A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke 12:49-53
Jesus said to his disciples: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three; a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.”
The Gospel of the Lord.
Reflection
This is one of my favorite Gospel passages and it’s also one that is difficult to understand. Jesus speaks about bringing fire to the earth and the division that His message will cause, even among close family members. This passage can be unsettling, it even seems to go against His character as “prince of peace”, it challenges our natural desire for peace and unity. Jesus is not advocating for disunity for its own sake. He is highlighting the radical transformation that His Gospel demands. The fire He speaks of is the fire of God’s love and truth, which purifies and refines – the Holy Spirit. As we embrace this truth, we may find ourselves at odds with those who resist change or cling to worldly values. This division is a necessary part of our journey toward deeper faith and commitment to Christ. Our faith may separate us from family and friends, but it unites us with the Heavenly Father – are we willing to make that sacrifice?
In our personal lives, this Gospel calls us to be courageous and authentic witnesses of our faith, even when it leads to difficult conversations and strained relationships. As we strive to follow Jesus more closely, we must be prepared to face misunderstandings and opposition. We are also called to embody Christ’s love and compassion in these moments of conflict. We can become instruments of His peace, inviting others to encounter the transformative power of His love. Learn to trust in God’s guidance and remain steadfast in our mission, knowing that the fire Jesus kindles in us is ultimately one of hope, renewal, and eternal life.
