A Daily Gospel Reflection by Dn. Mike Hidalgo for May 30th, 2025

The Holy Gospel according to John (16:20-23).

Jesus said to his disciples: “Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn,
while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy.
When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because her hour has arrived; but when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.
So you also are now in anguish. But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. On that day you will not question me about anything. Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you.”

The Gospel of the Lord.

Reflection: In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells His disciples: “You will weep and mourn while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy.” These words, spoken before His Passion, are deeply human and hopeful. Jesus acknowledges the pain His followers will feel, but He assures them that sorrow is not the end of the story. This is the mystery of the Christian life. Suffering is real but is never wasted. Just as a mother’s labor pains give way to the joy of new life, when we unite our struggles with Christ, they are transformed. Resurrection always follows the Cross.

Jesus never promised a life without hardships. He never promised us a rose garden. Life is not going to be easy. Jesus is promising that our pain will have meaning and that joy will return. That joy will be the joy that no one can take from us because it is a joy established in Christ.

When things are not going well, we want to avoid discomfort, and we want quick fixes. The Gospel today reminds us to remain patient in our trials and to trust that God is at work even in the silence. If we trust in Jesus and remain close to Him, our mourning will be turned into dancing, and our hearts will rejoice. As Ecclesiastes 3:4 tells us, “There is a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance.”

Action for the day: If you are currently experiencing tough times in your life, seek comfort from our Lord, so those tough times, which are temporary, may be turned to joy. May we seek comfort from a friend, through prayer and receiving the sacraments. If your life is joyful, give thanks to God.
