The Holy Gospel according to Luke (8:16-18)
Jesus said to the crowd:
“No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel
or sets it under a bed;
rather, he places it on a lampstand
so that those who enter may see the light.
For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible,
and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light.
Take care, then, how you hear.
To anyone who has, more will be given,
and from the one who has not,
even what he seems to have will be taken away.”
Reflection: “so that those who enter may see the light”.
This passage is an invitation to us to share the light of Christ and the truth of the gospel with others. When we receive God’s word, it should transform us and be visible in our lives, so that it may enlighten others.
“Take care how you hear” because receptive listeners will be given more understanding, leading to greater peace and happiness in their lives. Conversely, those who reject or hide the light will find their spiritual understanding reduced or lessened.
So, my sisters and brothers, what does that light represent to you in your life? Have you experienced this light? Are you the bright light for others? Let’s put this into a realistic scenario. When you get up in the morning at 3:00am for a drink of water or for a snack in the fridge, you rely on some type of light to guide you even though you have walked that path hundreds of times but yet you can still trip and fall; or you would stub your toe or trip over the dog without such guiding light. When you are in a dark room and the slightest of light will guide you. The same rule applies to our spiritual life.
God’s love and word is a lamp for our spiritual steps, a lamp that shines from the inside of our personalities. And only we can choose to put it out. The light is the light of the love is always there, shining in darkness, doubt, meanness and sin. All we have to do is reach for it.
Jesus seemed to be saying to the crowd, “Listen up!” as he spoke to them about the qualities of faith: “To anyone who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he seems to have will be taken away.” In other words, those with strong faith, looking for ways to radiate the light of Christ, will always have what they need, and more, to fulfill their unique missions, and their faith will continue to grow. Those who neglect their spiritual life allow their faith to wither and end up with none.
Action of the Day: My sisters and brothers, ask yourself these questions: What does that light represent to you in your life? Have you experienced this light? Are you the bright light for others?
