The Holy Gospel according to (John 12:24-26).
Jesus said to his disciples: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat; but if it dies, it produces much fruit.
Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will preserve it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me.”

Reflection: In today’s Gospel, Jesus uses the image of a grain of wheat to show a deep spiritual truth, that life comes through death, fruitfulness through sacrifice. Jesus is speaking of His own impending death, but also teaching us a truth of Catholic Christian discipleship. The grain of wheat must “die” in order to fulfill its purpose. As Catholic Christian disciples, we are called to die to self, giving up our ego, our comfort, our desire for control, and surrender to do God’s will. In Matthew 16:24, Jesus tells us, “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” Only then can Christ truly live in us and bear fruit through us. We are not talking about martyrdom. This is about daily sacrifices we are called to make, such as forgiving someone who hurt us, being patient with those who try us, choosing humility over pride, giving time and love without expecting anything in return. Jesus goes on to say, “Whoever serves me must follow me.” Following Christ means walking the path of self-giving love, even when it is difficult to do so. Here is His promise to us: “The Father will honor whoever serves me.” Every act of love, every small death to self, will bear fruit.
Today is the Memorial of St. Ignatius of Antioch, Bishop and Martyr. This Gospel is from the readings for his memorial. Born around the time of Christ’s death, St. Ignatius was a disciple of St. John and a leading figure in the Church in Antioch, where he was bishop for 38 years. He was arrested during the persecution under Trajan, condemned for confessing Christ, and sent to be executed in the Roman Colosseum. During this long journey to Rome, St. Ignatius wrote several letters of instruction and encouragement to the Christians in Asia Minor. St. Ignatius is believed to be the first person to refer to the Church as “Catholic”? A zealous defender of the faith, St. Ignatius emphasized the importance of the unity of the Church throughout his lifetime.
Action for the Day: May we pray for the grace to die to ourselves everyday so that we may live more fully in Christ. Ask the Lord for the courage to follow Him, even when the path is difficult. Help us to trust that every sacrifice made in love will bear fruit in building up the Kingdom of God.
