A Daily Gospel Reflection by Dn. Carlos Porras Jr. for December 10th, 2025

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (11:28-30)

Jesus said to the crowds:
“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened,
and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am meek and humble of heart;
and you will find rest for yourselves.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

REFLECTION: Jesus’ tender invitation for the weary and the burdened, to find true rest, peace, and meaning in Him, does not escape one’s life’s hard challenges. In moments of difficulties, even though we cannot understand how, He helps us carry our burdens, under His light “yoke,” learning His gentle humble ways, and experiencing His supportive presence, as He carries our load, offering us, spiritual renewal and eternal life.

His yoke is not a heavier set of rules, but a shared partnership, like two oxen pulling together, where He carries the load with you, making it lighter. The yoke symbolizes His way of life, characterized by love, gentleness, and humility, which brings liberation, not bondage. His gentleness and humility, highlights His own meek, humble heart, as the source of this rest, contrasting with the harsh, burdensome religious practices of some. By coming to Jesus when we are weary, it’s an opportunity we have, when He gives us strength, purpose, and comfort for our soul’s struggles, emotional pain, and grief. It’s also an opportunity to build a personal, intimate relationship with Jesus, embracing His teachings, and relying on His grace, to navigate life’s challenges.

There is this story, that takes place in a busy, sunbaked village, where an old baker, named Eli, spent his life under the crushing weight, of his endless work and worry. His debts were heavy, his spirit beat, and his heart felt heavy, like deadweight around his neck. One afternoon, a quiet carpenter named Jesus, sat beside Eli’s dusty stand. He didn’t offer to buy bread; instead, he offered Eli a rest. “Come to me, Eli,” the carpenter said gently. “Give me your burdens. My yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Eli, desperate for a moment’s peace, closed his eyes, and simply believed the man’s promise. In that instant, the invisible weight on his soul, didn’t disappear, but it transformed. He saw, that by sharing his heavy load with the carpenter, the burden of life, was no longer for him, to carry alone. For the first time in years, the old baker breathed freely, the sweetness of true rest, filling his heart.

ACTION FOR THE DAY:  Make time from the business of your day, to consciously pause, admit your weariness/burdens, and actively “come to Jesus” through prayer, asking Him to exchange your heavy load for His easy yoke, learning His gentle and humble way, by focusing on loving God and others, rather than self-effort, finding true rest in His partnership.
