A Daily Gospel Reflection by Dn. Carlos Porras Jr. for July 8th, 2026

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (10:1-7)

Jesus summoned his Twelve disciples

and gave them authority over unclean spirits to drive them out

and to cure every disease and every illness.

The names of the Twelve Apostles are these:

first, Simon called Peter, and his brother Andrew;

James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John;

Philip and Bartholomew,

Thomas and Matthew the tax collector;

James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus;

Simon the Cananean, and Judas Iscariot

who betrayed Jesus.

Jesus sent out these Twelve after instructing them thus,

“Do not go into pagan territory or enter a Samaritan town.

Go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.’”

Reflection:

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, in today’s Gospel Jesus does something extraordinary. He takes a ragtag group of ordinary men—fishermen, tax collectors, and diehards—calls them by name and empowers them to do His work. He doesn’t look at their resume or interviews them, to choose the most qualified; He looks at their heart and equips them with His own authority.

If you have being baptized, you are the modern-day continuation of those Twelve Apostles. You have already been called by Jesus to evangelize, by stepping out to bring the light of the Gospel into a lost world. But sometimes, when we are actively out there sharing the Good News, we get overwhelmed. We worry if we have the right words, the perfect theological argument, or the perfect strategy to change hearts. As if we were doing it on our own!

However, Jesus gives His disciples—and He gives you and I—a very specific and beautifully simple instruction: “As you go, make this proclamation: ‘The Kingdom of heaven is at hand.'” In other words, He is near! But when? In Kairos time! Meaning, in His decisive time.

Also, notice what Jesus did not tell them to win every debate, to reprimand people for their sins, or to fix the entire broken culture overnight. He simply told them, to announce that God’s reign is close. When we are evangelizing, our role is to be a bridge. We are the one pointing to the horizon and doing it simple, nothing fancy. We must make the Kingdom of Heaven feel tangible, through our patience, our active listening, our forgiveness, and our genuine love—never judging.

Just like those first apostles, our mission must begin with Christ and stay rooted in Him. I once heard; “We cannot pour out the Living Water, if we aren’t spending time being filled by it ourselves.”

Each day, Jesus calls you/me by name, hands us His authority, and sends us out, to the “lost sheep” in our own neighborhoods, our workplaces, and in our families. Do not let fear or the illusion of our own limitations, silence our witness. We are the vessel; Jesus is the one doing the healing and the transforming. May we have the courage to step out today and always, with confidence. Keeping our message simple, our faith bold, and our trust entirely in Him.

Action for the day: As you go out today and, in the days to come, remember that you are bringing the tangible presence of Christ, to a world that feels abandoned. When you share the Good News, do not rely on your own strength. Lean into the authority He has already given you, speak the simple truth of His nearness, and let Him do the heavy lifting of healing hearts—Christ is counting on you!
