The Holy Gospel according to John 1:45-51
Philip found Nathanael and told him,
“We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law,
and also the prophets, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”
But Nathanael said to him,
“Can anything good come from Nazareth?”
Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him,
“Here is a true child of Israel.
There is no duplicity in him.”
Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?”
Jesus answered and said to him,
“Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.”
Nathanael answered him,
“Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.”
Jesus answered and said to him,
“Do you believe
because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree?
You will see greater things than this.”
And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you,
you will see heaven opened and the angels of God
ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
Reflection:
Have you ever faced a situation that was not exactly a crisis, but still felt unresolved—something involving your car, a partner or friend, a minor health issue, or something broken at your home? At first, you may have believed it couldn’t be fixed but as time grew on, you started to doubt, faith began to fade, and you felt lost (frustrated). Then you bump into someone and they heard your issue and said, “I know someone who can help” or “I know a Guy”. How many times have we heard that statement in our lives. Reluctantly, perhaps out of desperation, you went to that person—and the problem was fixed. From that moment, you believed, and your view of life changed.
The central message of this Gospel is that Jesus is THE promised Messiah and Son of God—the one who can restore what is broken. We are invited to “come and see,” to encounter Him for ourselves, become believers, and follow Him. The truth is, God has had a plan for us since before we were conceived, as Jeremiah 1:5 reminds us: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born, I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
Here is a real-life example: Ray Gallego was born, and God was already preparing him to serve the Church. In his youth, he was personally surrounded by priests and active parishioners and was told he would become one himself. “Ha, right!” he thought. Through high school, college, and even marriage, he continued to resist the call and even stepped away from the Church for a time. Still, God remained patient, and Jesus kept knocking at his door. Then one day, Ray reluctantly attended a Cursillo weekend, and the Holy Spirit slapped him upside his head—and everything changed. He finally said yes to God and to the “Call” placed on his life.
This moment brings the Scriptures to life. The one Moses and the prophets promised is now standing before them: Jesus, recognized as Rabbi, Son of God, and King of Israel. Philip does not launch into a long debate or try to force Nathanael to believe. Instead, he simply shares what he has found and offers the invitation that can change everything: “Come and see.” Nathanael arrives with doubt in his heart and Nazareth on his lips, but an encounter with Jesus opens his eyes. He discovers that faith is not built on arguments alone, but on meeting the Lord personally.
“I know a Guy” who is named Jesus, He promises that faith is only the beginning, and His disciples will witness a deeper connection between heaven and earth simply by becoming “Believers”.

Think back and identify all the signs that you have ignored? What was it that God was asking you to do? The question or calling could come through someone you know or even a stranger.
