The Holy Gospel according to Luke (12:54-59).
Jesus said to the crowds, “When you see a cloud rising in the west you say immediately that it is going to rain–and so it does; and when you notice that the wind is blowing from the south you say that it is going to be hot–and so it is.
You hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky; why do you not know how to interpret the present time?
“Why do you not judge for yourselves what is right? If you are to go with your opponent before a magistrate, make an effort to settle the matter on the way; otherwise your opponent will turn you over to the judge, and the judge hand you over to the constable, and the constable throw you into prison.
I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.”
The Gospel of the Lord.
Reflection: My brothers and sisters in Christ, in today’s Gospel, Jesus challenges the people to recognize the signs of the times. They know how to interpret the weather by looking at the clouds and wind, but they struggle to recognize what God is doing in their lives.
Jesus reminds us that we must examine what is happening within our hearts. It is not enough to understand what is happening around us. How often do we pay attention to the news, our work, and the concerns of our daily life, but fail to see God’s presence around us? God speaks to us through the Scriptures, prayer, other people, the mass, and ordinary events of our life. Do we recognize God’s presence during these times?
We know that God is always inviting us to grow in faith and in relationship with Him. We need to ask ourselves, “Are we listening?”
Jesus also speaks about settling matters with others. This is about the importance of reconciliation. We allow broken relationships to remain broken when we hold on to anger, resentment, or pride. Our Lord calls us to make peace while we still have the time. As Catholic Christians, we are called to seek forgiveness and extend mercy to those who have hurt us. This is something we pray for when we pray the Lord’s Prayer, “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” The message we can take from today’s Gospel is this: recognize God’s presence around us and respond to His call while we have time.
Action for the Day: Is there someone we need to forgive? Is there a relationship that we need to repair? What do we need to change in our life? Pray for the grace to forgive, to repair, and to change. Pray for the grace to recognize God’s presence around us.
